Lions sleep 22 hours a day and can live up to 25 years. In the wild lions also devote an inordinate amount of time sleeping, especially after a big meal.
The lion reigns as King of Beasts and is extremely social. It has a family structure known as a pride which varies in size from 4-40 lions, consisting of approximately 4-12 lionesses, their offspring and one to six nomadic adult males who have fought their way to dominance. A pride will range over an area between 10-175 square miles. Female lions are the hunters. Hungry lionesses will hunt during daylight hours, but nocturnal hunts are generally more successful. Males stay behind to protect the territory and guard the extended family.
